“I have been a member of the bank for 30 years. For the last nine years I have been an elected director of the Board of Move Bank and have been a member of the Risk Management Committee or the Audit & Compliance Committee in that time. I have been Chair for the last 3 years. I am now seeking member re-appointment as a company Director. I have worked in QR, QR National and Aurizon since 1987 performing numerous operational and executive roles, delivering Bulk, Freight and Passenger rail services across Queensland.

My education includes a Business Qualification from Queensland University of Technology and an Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of Queensland. I have been a Chartered Executive Member of the Institute of Engineers and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. My lengthy experience and friendships in the rail industry give me a passion for the bank and the services it provides. I have been active in ensuring Move’s financial education services reach people in QR to help them become financially independent.

Over a thirty-five-year railway career, I have observed firsthand the support that the bank provides, particularly to regional members. I believe in the need for these trusted financial services and the support that Move provides. I am keen to be part of the development of these services into the future. Transition to 9-Digit Account Numbers - October 2025

To help make payments simpler and more secure, MOVE Bank will be transitioning to using only 9-digit account numbers for inbound payments from 1 February 2026.

This change means that from 1 February 2026, any payments made using a member number or internal account number (for example, 987654S3) will no longer be accepted.

To ensure your payments continue to be received without interruption, please make sure that your 9-digit account number is being used for all transfers or deposits to your MOVE Bank accounts.

What You Need to Do

If you or someone else has a future-dated or regularly scheduled payment set up from another financial institution to your MOVE Bank account, please review and update these details before 1 February 2026.

Each MOVE Bank account already has its own unique 9-digit account number, so updating your details is simple.

Finding Your 9-Digit Account Number

You can locate your 9-digit account number in several ways:

Internet Banking: Log in and select Account Information to view your account details.
Bank Statement: Your 9-digit account number appears in the Account Summary section, listed as Account Number.
Contact Us: Call our friendly team on 1300 362 216 or visit our Internet Banking Hub for more information.

Your account number will always begin with 100xxxxxx.

As tax season approaches, it's essential to be vigilant against a surge in scams targeting Australian taxpayers. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has reported a significant increase in impersonation scams, with over 6,000 incidents reported in April 2025 alone¹.

Understanding the Threat

Scammers often pose as the ATO, contacting individuals via email, SMS, or phone calls, claiming issues with tax returns or offering unexpected refunds. These communications may appear legitimate, using official logos and language to deceive recipients.

In a notable trend, email scams have surged by over 300% compared to the previous year, particularly during tax time when individuals are more likely to expect correspondence from the ATO².

Common Scam Tactics

Phishing Emails and SMS: Messages containing links to fake myGov websites, prompting users to enter personal information.
Phone Calls: Scammers impersonating ATO officials, demanding immediate payment for alleged tax debts.
myGovID Scams: Fraudulent communications requesting users to reconfirm details due to the transition from myGovID to myID, leading to identity theft.

With just a little planning (and a few smart tools), you can take the pressure off and feel confident when it’s time to lodge your return. Whether you're hoping for a refund or just want to tick it off your to-do list, here’s what you should know before the financial year wraps up.

The Basics: What You’ll Need

Before you sit down to lodge, take a moment to round up your documents. Think of it like a mini financial stocktake. You’ll need:

Your income statement (your employer usually submits this directly to the ATO)
Any bank statements showing interest earned — some of this may already be prefilled if you use myGov. You can also view our tutorial on how to locate your interest information in Internet Banking.
Records of work-related expenses (travel, uniforms, tools, memberships, home office items etc.)
Receipts for costs associated with investment properties (if applicable)
Any other income you’ve received this year — side gigs, freelance work, dividends or Centrelink payments

What you should know

Revised Personal Income Tax Rates for FY 24-25

Effective from 1 July 2024, the Australian Government has implemented significant changes to personal income tax rates and thresholds to provide cost-of-living relief¹:

Tax Rate Reductions:

The 19% tax rate has been reduced to 16%.
The 32.5% tax rate has been reduced to 30%.

Threshold Adjustments:

The threshold for the 37% tax rate has increased from $120,000 to $135,000.
The threshold for the 45% tax rate has increased from $180,000 to $190,000.

These changes mean that all 13.6 million Australian taxpayers will receive a tax cut from 2024–25 onwards. For example, a person earning $75,000 will receive a tax cut of approximately $1,554.

Don’t Leave It Too Late

The official deadline to lodge your tax return is 31 October — unless you're using a registered tax agent, in which case they may have special lodgement extensions (as long as you're on their books before then).

And if you do end up with a tax bill instead of a refund, your Notice of Assessment will include instructions on how and when to pay.

Our Member’s Online Banking Success Stories - April 2025

For years, many of our members have relied on Telebalance, our phone banking system, to manage their accounts. However, with its limited functionality and recent decommissioning by the service provider, members now have the opportunity to discover the convenience and versatility of our Internet Banking platform. Thanks to the dedicated support of our Member Experience team, members of all ages and backgrounds are making the transition seamlessly and experiencing the benefits firsthand.

One of our team’s proudest moments was assisting a 93 year old member in logging into the mobile banking app for the first time. Initially hesitant, he was pleasantly surprised at how quick and simple it was to set up. With guidance, he established regular payments between his accounts and created a payee address book for future transactions. Shortly after, he called back, excited to share that he had successfully made his first transfer. An incredible step towards digital independence!

These success stories are not uncommon. One of our team members helped a member navigate Internet Banking for the first time, ensuring they felt confident and empowered by the end of the call. Another member was delighted to discover how effortless online transfers could be, remarking on the simplicity of the process.

Passwords Security:

Passwords protect your personal information, so it is important to create complex and unique passwords and update them regularly. This means that if one of your online accounts is compromised, you can be confident that your Internet Banking password is still secure.

Ensure you don’t write down or keep copies of your passwords on a post-it note, in a diary or any item or place that could be easily lost or stolen and used to access your accounts. Instead, do your best to memorise your passwords or use a secure password-storage service.

Register for One Time Passwords:

One Time Passwords is an extra layer of security which makes it highly difficult for fraudsters to gain access to your Internet Banking. You can register for One Time Passwords in internet banking by going to the ‘Settings’ menu and selecting ‘Manage One Time Passwords’.

Be Scam Aware:

MOVE Bank will never ask you to disclose your password in an email, over the phone, or by any other means. If you ever receive an email link to our website, or asking for your username or password, do not respond or click any of the links in the email.

Always login to internet banking via our direct website, never from a third party link on another website or email. If you do come across such links or emails please contact us immediately on 1300 362 216.

Don’t give anyone remote access to your computer. There are fraudsters claiming to be from reputable companies like Microsoft, Telstra and the NBN who call unsuspecting people offering tech support. If you receive one of these calls, do not allow the person access or give them any personal information and contact us immediately on 1300 362 216.

How Do Phishing Scams Work?

Scammers often pose as banks, utility companies, government agencies, streaming services (like Netflix), payment platforms (like PayPal), or even law enforcement. They reach out through phone calls, emails, text messages, or social media, attempting to trick you into revealing personal details, financial information, or access to your device.

They may also use links that install malware or remote access software, or convince you to install software (such as AnyDesk), giving them control of your computer or phone. This can lead to identity theft, financial fraud, or even unauthorised transactions on your accounts.

Warning Signs of a Phishing Scam

Stay alert to these red flags:

Emails or messages from unusual addresses that look similar to legitimate organisations but aren’t quite right
Requests for personal or banking information, such as passwords, credit card details, or identification documents
Requests with urgency or threatening language, pressuring you to act quickly
Deals that seem ‘too good to be true’ or offers of rewards, refunds, or prizes that require a processing or delivery fee.
Unexpected calls or emails asking for remote access to your device to “fix” an issue or verify your identity

How to Stay Safe

The best way to protect yourself is to stay cautious and follow Scamwatch’s Stop, Check, Protect approach:

Stop – Pause before taking action or responding to unexpected messages or requests.
Check – Contact the organisation directly using official details to confirm legitimacy.
Protect – Contact your bank if you notice unusual activity and report scams to protect others.

What to Do If You’re Scammed

If you think you’ve fallen victim to a scam, contact your bank or financial institution immediately and report to Scamwatch and/or cyber.gov.au. By sharing your story, you contribute to protecting others and stopping these criminals.

Celebrating Women in Banking on IWD 2025

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, we embrace the theme of “Marching Forward”—a call to progress, inspire, and uplift the next generation of women. To highlight the impact of women in banking, we asked some of our staff to share their insights on leadership, progress, and inspiration. Their voices reflect the strides we’ve made and the journey still ahead.

Teri has witnessed incredible progress in the industry, with more women stepping into senior leadership and board roles. “Banks are actively working towards greater gender balance, and flexible work options are making it easier for women to remain in the workforce while managing family responsibilities.”

For Kellie, mentorship and knowledge-sharing are key to sustaining this progress. “Marching forward means passing on the lessons we’ve learned—using our voices, leading with compassion, and ensuring the next generation feels empowered to step into leadership.”

Debbie, new to the banking sector but a veteran of the financial industry, has witnessed remarkable change over the past four decades. “Back in the ’80s, women were often overlooked for leadership roles. Now, our COO is a woman, and we have countless women in management—something that was almost unheard of back then.” For her, marching forward means ensuring opportunities are based on merit, not gender.

Sarah also reflects on the impact she can have as a female board member. “When I joined the MOVE Bank board, being a female member of the board was a really exciting opportunity for me. I see the role of directors as being such a vital part of the stability of a company and as the voice of their members, so I was very excited to bring a diverse voice to the table.”

Phebe hopes to continue marching forward as an industry by setting a strong example of female leadership. “Having women in leadership roles demonstrates that we are equal and capable of achieving just as much, if not more.”

Mel attributes her success to the inspiring female leaders she has worked with over the past 30 years. “They have shown empathy, resilience, and strong communication skills—creating supportive environments that make work a place where people want to be.”

For Nat, her vision for the future is one of inclusivity, mentorship, and efficiency. “I hope to leave a legacy ensuring that women in the industry feel empowered to lead with confidence.”

Belinda also hopes her legacy will help redefine what true leadership is. “My goal is to instil that confidence in every decision they make, helping them lead with both intelligence and heart in all that they do.”

I am writing to you in the aftermath of Cyclone Alfred in South East Queensland, which followed closely on the heels of the devastating flooding in North Queensland caused by severe tropical lows.

I sincerely hope that all of you, our wonderful members, and your families are safe and have not suffered any significant property damage or other hardships.

I am no climate scientist, but having lived in Queensland for most of my life, I know that resilience is second nature to us. We have become well-practiced in navigating these events, and the Queensland spirit continues to shine through. I particularly loved seeing the news footage of people gathered on the verandah of the Hotel Euramo, north of Townsville, finding moments of togetherness even in the face of devastation.

To the incredible employees at MOVE Bank: Over the past few weeks, you have once again shown what a remarkable team you are. Despite facing your own challenges, you stepped up to ensure MOVE Bank was there for the community, doing so with commitment, patience, and good humour. Thank you.

Let’s talk about the 2.74-billion-dollar problem. Scams.

Here’s the thing about scammers - they’re relentless. Through the shift to the digital age, these digital thieves have stepped up their game with full-blown call centres, fake websites, and schemes so polished, they are tricking hundreds of thousands of hard-working Australians out of billions every year.

Let’s start 2025 off right by knowing exactly what to watch out for and how to stay one step ahead.

A Few Key Things About Scams

Here’s a rundown of some of the biggest scams happening right now. They’re sneaky, but once you know their tricks, they’re much easier to spot:

1. Remote Access Scams

These scammers impersonate reputable organisations like Microsoft, the ATO, the AFP, or even a member of the scam team from a well-known bank. They might say something is wrong, and they need you to download software so they can "fix the problem" lest you fall prey to vicious online attacks (don’t you love the irony?). What they’re actually fixing is their access to your money.

Their Playbook:

These scammers create a sense of urgency, requesting software downloads, one-time passwords, or other personal information.

How to Beat Them:

If anyone asks to remotely access your device, hang up. MOVE Bank or any legitimate business will never make you do this. Ensure you never provide your one-time passwords over the phone.

2. Phishing Emails and Texts

Phishing is incredibly common, but thankfully a good spam filter can go a long way with these. Phishing scams run through messages or emails to you pretending to be your bank, a delivery service, toll companies, the list is endless.

They’ll include links asking you to "confirm your details" or "fix a problem." Spoiler alert: it’s always fake.

Their Playbook:

These scammers design emails and texts to look legit, often with logos and official-sounding language.

How to Beat Them:

Don’t click links or open attachments you aren’t expecting or from anyone you don’t trust. Hover over links before clicking them to see the URL attached. Visit the official website or contact the company directly to verify.

3. Fake Websites

These are the digital equivalent of a knock-off designer bag - flashy, tempting, and completely fake. They mimic real retailers with unbelievable deals. You hand over your card details thinking you’ve scored a bargain, but the only thing you’re getting is scammed. These schemes are especially prolific during sales events like Black Friday and Boxing Day. The instant tell? It feels urgent and too good to be true.

Their Playbook:

These scammers will throw in amazing discounts and countdown timers to pressure you into buying fast.

How to Beat Them:

Check the web address for typos, look for "https" in the URL, and use trusted payment methods for extra protection.

4. Social Engineering Scams

Basically, emotional manipulation at its lowest. Scammers pretend to be someone you know (a friend, family member, or coworker) and use personal details to gain your trust.

Their Playbook:

They might say they’re in trouble and need money urgently.

How to Beat Them:

Verify by contacting the person through another method, like a phone call or text message. Never send money without checking first.

Stay Sharp and Always:

Be Suspicious of Urgency: Scammers want you to act fast so you don’t have time to think. Pause and ask yourself: “Does this sound legit?”
Hang Up and Call Back: If a representative from an organisation calls from an unknown number, hang up and call the company directly using their official number.
Keep Your Devices Secure: Regularly update your phone, computer, and apps. Updates include security fixes that block hackers. Turn on your system update reminders to help with this.
Use Strong Passwords: Avoid simple passwords like your name, your birthday or our personal favourite; ‘123456’. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. A password manager can help you create and store unique passwords for every account.
Spread the Word: Talk to friends and family about common scams, especially if they’re less familiar with technology. A quick chat could save them a lot of trouble. If you’ve spotted a scam, report it to Scamwatch and your bank.

Wrap up of our 56th Annual General Meeting

MOVE Bank’s AGM was held on 14 November 2024.

We always enjoy the opportunity to connect with our members in person and appreciate your participation in the Bank’s governance. The AGM provides a great opportunity for members to connect with each other and with the Bank’s Board and Management.

Scott Riedel, the Bank’s Chairman, discussed MOVE Bank’s ongoing commitment to the financial education and support of the rail community. He noted our record loan growth of $86 million during the year, with the vast majority of which was used to help members purchase homes to live in.

Mike Currie, our CEO, discussed the Bank’s achievements during the year. We remained profitable despite large investments in technology and strong competition in the finance sector. We have received over 100 industry awards over the past 7 years and are continuing to simplify our product mix whilst offering highly competitive rates for both borrowers and depositors.

Members voted to reappoint Rachel Adair and Sarah Dixon to the Board, and to provide the Board with an increase in remuneration of 4.2% in line with Wages Price Index of the Bank.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the members who attended the AGM and those who voted online for the important role they are playing in MOVE Bank’s governance. Thank you all for your continued support and your participation.

Refinancing might sound a bit technical, but at its core, it’s just about getting a better deal on your home loan. Think of it like switching to a new phone plan - except you’re potentially saving thousands. With interest rates and personal goals constantly shifting, now might be the perfect time to give your mortgage a glow-up.

How Does Refinancing Work?

Refinancing is basically replacing your current home loan with a new one - hopefully with better features and lower running costs. Here's how it usually plays out:

Crunch the Numbers: Look at your current loan and compare it with other offers. Are you paying too much interest? Could you shorten your term or unlock equity for other goals?
Apply for the New Loan: Once you’ve picked a winner, it’s time to apply. You’ll need to provide some paperwork (pay slips, ID, and details about your property).
Settle the Old Loan: Your shiny new loan pays off the old one, and just like that, you’re on to bigger and better things.

What Does Refinancing Cost?

An unavoidable truth we have all learnt is that nothing in life is free. Refinancing can come with a few upfront costs, but long-term it can save you thousands. Here are the usual fees you’ll be dealing with (remember, thousands):

Application or Establishment Fee: The cost of applying for your new loan.
Property Valuation Fee: This covers an updated valuation of your property, so the lender knows what it’s worth. MOVE Bank includes one free valuation in the establishment fee (up to $205)
Legal and Discharge Fees: Paid to your current lender for wrapping up your old loan and registering the new one.
Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI): If you’re borrowing more than 80% of your property’s value, you may need to pay this.

Mel Cross -

16 years with MOVE Bank

Mel Cross recently celebrated her 16-year milestone working at MOVE Bank. We sat down with her to learn more about her journey and the highlights along the way.

Mel began her career at Railways Credit Union in 2008, joining in a part-time job-share role. “I started working two days a week, mainly handling personal loan documentation and funding,” she recalls. At the time, this role was the perfect fit for balancing work with raising a young family.

As the years went by, Mel gradually increased her hours to a full-time position. “Over time, I’ve spent most of my time in lending operations, and I also worked in banking operations for a few years,” she shares. Her progression through various departments allowed her to build a well-rounded understanding of the business.

When asked what initially attracted her to the organisation, Mel points to the flexibility, but also the smaller, family-like atmosphere. “You know everyone by face and name, which is so nice”. The community feel, and the balance between work and personal life have been key factors in her long-term commitment.

Throughout her career, Mel has had several memorable moments. One of the highlights came in 2022 when she was named Employee of the Year. “Being recognised for my hard work was such a wonderful feeling,” she says.

Another standout experience has been the team-building activities, which have helped strengthen relationships among staff while also providing fun and unique experiences. “We’ve done some amazing things, like learning to play the violin at one event and running around the city like the Amazing Race in another,” she said. These events have made lasting memories and deepened the bonds among her colleagues.

Mel currently works as a Senior Lending Operations Officer and is an invaluable member of the team. Her extensive experience provides a wealth of knowledge, which she generously shares with her colleagues. With her 'member-first' approach, she consistently delivers exceptional outcomes for our members and inspires those around her to do the same.

For those starting their careers at MOVE Bank, Mel has simple advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, as everyone is always willing to help.”

Congratulations on 16 years Mel! Thank you for your dedication. We are so lucky to have you on the team!

Bethany Duxbury-Jones -

From Training to Employee!

Bethany recently completed a school-based traineeship and is about to transition into a full-time role at MOVE Bank. Here’s a look at her journey so far.

When asked what drew them to MOVE Bank, Bethany explained, “I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in finance, and MOVE Bank stood out to me because of its strong values and customer-first approach. I did some research before my interview and loved how the company focused on genuinely serving members, unlike larger banks where customers sometimes seem secondary.”

They continued, “When I met Maree during my interview, her energy and passion for the team really resonated with me. I could tell she genuinely cared about her employees, and that’s when I knew I belonged at MOVE Bank.”

Reflecting on their time as a trainee, they shared, “Being a trainee at MOVE Bank was the best decision I’ve made. I graduated high school and completed a Certificate III in Business Administration while working part-time. It was a busy year, but the support I received from my colleagues and supervisors made all the difference. Hearing my team cheer me on and count down until I went full time gave me the confidence to keep going.”

“It wasn’t just about the work; it was the relationships I built here that I’ll cherish forever,” she added.

Bethany emphasised the incredible support she received: “The training and mentorship I received were outstanding. My colleagues and managers helped me navigate my responsibilities, and I never once felt afraid to ask questions—no matter how small. I always felt appreciated, not just for my work, but for who I am. They truly cared about my success, both professionally and personally.”

“I was able to balance my schoolwork and certificate while preparing for full-time work,” she said. “It’s clear that my colleagues and managers wanted me to succeed, and that made me feel even more motivated to reach my goals.”

When asked about proud moments, she responded, “I feel proud every day, especially when I learn something new or overcome a challenge. But the moments I cherish the most are when my manager takes the time to thank me for my efforts. It’s really encouraging to know that my hard work is noticed and appreciated. It keeps me motivated to continue giving my best.”

Reflecting on their favourite part of working at MOVE Bank, they said, “My favourite part is the relationships I’ve built with my colleagues. They’re not just coworkers; they’re friends. The level of care and support here is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. MOVE Bank truly prioritises its employees, and I’ve never felt stressed or unsupported. It’s a workplace where I feel valued, and I couldn’t ask for more.”

The savviest of travellers know to sign up for airline rewards programs which allow you to earn points on purchases to spend on flights, hotels or even gifts.
