Heading on a road trip these school holidays? Protect your family and reduce the risk of breakdowns by performing these essential checks yourself.

Make sure your tyres are keeping you safe by checking air pressure, tread and even wear. At most service stations around Australia, you’ll find air pumps which will show you how to check your tyre air pressure. If it’s too high, you can simply release the valve to let out air, and if too low you’ll be able to add more air.

It’s also important to check your tyre tread, as worn tyres will impact how strongly your car is gripping to the road. If your tyre tread is unevenly worn, it’s a good idea to have your tyres rotated before you hit the road.

You can check your oil very easily by popping open the engine hood of your car. Simply park it on a level surface and wait for the oil to settle for a few moments. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean, then replace it back in the pipe. Once again, remove the dipstick and if the oil level is between the two markings you’re good to go! Otherwise, you can easily top up your oil at home.

Don’t forget to take a look at your car’s water levels and also check the floor where you park for fluid markings which can raise the alarm about other issues with your vehicle.

Seat belts and lights

Seat belts should be checked for wear and tear and damage from the sun. Give them a good tug to make sure they resist. If they’re loose or don’t resist, make sure to get them checked out by a professional.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your exterior lights are working correctly and don’t forget to check your indicators too!

Extra checks

Extra checks you can perform yourself include activating your wipers to make sure they work effectively, testing your horn, checking for cracks to your glass and mirrors, and pulling your handbrake on a steep hill to make sure it’ll work in an emergency.

Don’t forget to make sure that your car insurance is up-to-date and covers anyone who will be driving your car and all of your car’s accessories. If it’s been some time since your last review, call the MOVE Bank team on 1300 362 216 or visit movebank.com.au/checkup.
